State Library Victoria: Modern Maps

The State Library Victoria collects a broad range of maps primarily focusing on Victoria. Some of these maps include our printed bandannas from our Retracing Melbourne's Queer Footprints project.

As part of the Window on Collections Series, Queer-ways was invited to speak alongside other modern mapmakers to discuss our practice and how maps can represent our differing experiences of physical space.

QUEER IN MARIBYRNONG workshop

Responding to community interest in the lack of recorded rainbow history in the local area, our workshop united LGBTQIA+ youth to rework historical examples of queer visual language to inspire new outcomes representative of their contemporary identities and their context within the City of Maribyrnong.

The workshop shared queer history and culture from ancient times until the present day, featuring a presentation by guest speaker Timothy Jones, President of the Australian Queer Archives.

Attendees created artworks and bonds between themselves, queer histories, and their local community.

Making Maps with LUCIANO

As part of the Urban Canvas Mural Festival, LUCIANO held a workshop series at the Festival Hub, engaging the local community in map making.

Maps are a wonderful way of understanding how others see and experience the world. Attendees developed their own maps of their journey to the workshop, capturing the different ways they see the world and the locations and landmarks they remembered on their journey.
